I was watching Netflix series Explained episode The Future of Meat when I first saw a vegan burger patty with the brand name Impossible Burger. Instead of ground meat, the patty is made of water, soy protein concentrate, coconut oil, sunflower oil and natural flavors. In the episode, several kids were asked to choose from several samples of burger patties without any information on each of the patties, and most of them chose one plate that turns out the Impossible burger. These kids said beforehand that they hate vegetables.
I looked it up, tried to find one in Houston, and turns out I could try the Impossible Burger at a burger joint near my place around the Houston Galeria. The burger joint is called Hopdoddy Burger Bar, located in River Oaks District on Westheimer Road near I-610 West.
I went on the Sunday after Christmas, drove for about 10 mins and parked at River Oaks District garage. The place looks quite empty, figured everyone is still home with their family.
I found Hopdoddy burger bar and since I’m alone, the waiter offered to seat me at the bar. So I sat there, ordered one Impossible Cheesesteak with fries.
Didn’t wait too long for my burger.
The Impossible Cheesesteak is made of Impossible burger patty, Provolone & Swiss, Seared Peppers & Onions, Field Mushrooms, 78,000 Island, Yellow Mustard. All at the cost of $12.75 and 930 Cal or around one and a half hours of gym time for me. Based on the nutrition facts from impossible food’s website, the 4oz patty itself is 240 calories. As a comparison, the typical burger patty of the same size is around 260 calories.
It tastes really good and had I not known beforehand that its from soy, I would have thought that its just a regular burger. The kids on the Netflix show wasn’t lying. I really enjoyed the burger and can’t help but think about the future of processed food. The Netflix series showed me that there’s already lab grown chicken nuggets and burgers and we should expect to see more lab grown meat within the decade.
